Elon Musk’s America PAC Drops $800,000 into Must-Win Republican Midterm Races
By David Lindfield Elon Musk’s super PAC has made its first major publicly disclosed midterm spending push, pouring more than $800,000 into critical races Republicans need to win to maintain control of Congress.
Between August 19 and August 31, America PAC reported just over $800,000 in expenditures supporting Republican candidates and opposing Democrats, averaging roughly $70,000 per day, according to the latest filings.
The largest share of that spending went into Texas, where Republicans are fighting to hold a Senate seat that Democrats hope to turn competitive.
America PAC spent nearly $248,000 supporting Republican candidate Ken Paxton and opposing Democrat James Talarico.
The spending marks a significant development for Republicans after questions lingered over whether Musk would remain heavily involved in GOP politics following his earlier split with President Donald Trump.
Musk appears to be back in the fight.
Republicans Hold Cash Edge, but Key States Remain Competitive
Republicans enter the midterms with a major financial advantage, but several traditionally favorable states have become unexpectedly competitive.
Fox News Power Rankings identified difficult races for Republicans in states including Alaska, Iowa, Texas, and Ohio.
That makes Musk’s decision to begin deploying significant money particularly important as November approaches.
The majority of America PAC’s spending went toward printing expenses paid to Storytellers Group, a political vendor specializing in direct-mail campaigns.
During the 12-day period, the PAC spent approximately $123,000 opposing Talarico and another $125,000 supporting Paxton, according to a campaign finance filing released Wednesday.
Talarico has attempted to present himself as a moderate while facing scrutiny over past left-wing positions, including comments describing capitalism as an “oppressive system” that should be “dismantled.”
Musk’s intervention gives Paxton another major financial ally as Republicans seek to prevent Democrats from making inroads in Texas.
America PAC Targets Senate Battlegrounds
Musk’s PAC also directed substantial resources toward the Maine Senate race.
America PAC spent roughly $135,000 opposing Democratic nominee Troy Jackson and approximately $35,000 supporting incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).
Collins is seeking re-election in a left-leaning state and has repeatedly attempted to distinguish herself from national Republicans and the Trump administration.
America PAC’s spending nevertheless signals that Republican donors view the seat as too important to lose.
The PAC also spent money in Senate contests in Michigan, Ohio, and New Hampshire.
Additional funds were directed toward competitive House races in states including New York, Florida, and Wisconsin.
The spending shows Musk’s political operation focusing on exactly the races most likely to determine who controls Congress after November.
Musk Returns to Republican Fight
Musk’s involvement could become particularly important because Republican donors and lawmakers remain concerned that even the party’s current financial advantage may not be enough.
Some GOP figures have questioned how aggressively President Trump will deploy his roughly $400 million political war chest during the final stretch of the campaign.
Musk’s return gives Republicans another source of major outside spending.
Democrats are already attempting to turn his involvement into a political attack.
Musk has suffered low favorability ratings nationally, while his work with the Department of Government Efficiency drew sustained opposition from Democrats and the Left.
Candidates receiving America PAC support can now expect Democrats to portray them as aligned with the billionaire.
Talarico, for example, has centered part of his campaign around attacks on billionaire political influence.
But Republicans are unlikely to be troubled by Democrats complaining about outside spending while liberal megadonors continue pouring money into Democratic campaigns and organizations across the country.
For the GOP, the immediate priority is far simpler: win the races necessary to keep control of Congress.
And with America PAC now spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in some of the most consequential Senate and House contests on the map, Musk is once again becoming a major financial force behind that effort.
