Alokozay came to the US as part of the Biden administration's Operation Allies Welcome, the same program that admitted Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan national who has now been charged with shooting two National Guard troops in Washington, DC. One of the troops, Sarah Beckstrom, died on Thanksgiving. Andrew Wolfe, the second soldier, is in critical condition.

Under the Biden-era program, a report from the DOJ's Inspector General found that there were at least 55 Afghans admitted to the US that had suspected of terrorist ties. The Trump administration has now launched an effort to review as well as re-interview all those who came to the US under the program. The exodus from Afghanistan to the US came after the botched withdrawal in Afghanistan under the Biden administration.
The program allowed for over 70,000 Afghan nationals to come to the US. However, with the rushed execution, the vetting process of all those that came to the country has been brought into question. President Donald Trump has ordered that the immigration of Afghan nationals be halted for a time as vetting is executed, and the administration announced that all asylum claim decisions have been brought to a standstill for all nationalities.
