'Big Beer' Is America First As Anheuser-Busch Pours $600 Million Into American Manufacturing Jobs

By Becky Noble

We all remember during the 2016 Presidential campaign, when former President Barack Obama was asked about blue-collar jobs that continued to go overseas. He stated matter-of-factly that “some of those jobs of the past are just not going to come back," and even added a bit of snark, saying of then-candidate Donald Trump, who had promised a revival of manufacturing jobs, “There’s no answer to it...  What magic wand do you have?” Well, like a lot of other things, turns out we didn't need a magic wand, just a new President.

On Wednesday, beer giant Anheuser-Busch (AB) announced it would be expanding on its promise to create and sustain American manufacturing jobs by increasing investments in U.S. operations to $600 million through 2025 and 2026. Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth stated,

“Anheuser-Busch’s $600 million investment is a testament to our unwavering commitment to the future of American manufacturing. By strengthening our manufacturing operations, we are creating sustainable careers – not just jobs – and investing in the people who are vital to our success. We are proud to continue building the next generation of manufacturing leaders through our new technical training centers while also providing new opportunities in the workforce for our nation’s veterans.”

AB's extensive plan is based on three things: Creating and sustaining manufacturing jobs, building the manufacturing workforce for the future, and strengthening manufacturing career opportunities for veterans. They plan to open 15 new technical skills training centers at AB facilities across the country and collaborate with technical trade schools. The idea is to upskill more than 90 percent of the technical workforce over the next five years. So far, more than 2,700 have received training at the first best-in-class Technical Excellence Center at AB's home in St. Louis.

But the best thing about the massive investment in American manufacturing jobs is AB's commitment to the nation's veterans. They are working with the Manufacturing Institute's "Heroes MAKE America" initiative, which assists current and former military members with resources in pursuing manufacturing careers. SmartResume has also partnered with the Heroes MAKE America Talent and developed a platform that will allow veterans to make their military skills more visible and understood by potential employers. AB added the platform to their career website in order to support the hiring of veterans and guide them through the application process.

Anheuser-Busch is not the only corporation that has figured out that investing in the American workforce is a sure bet. Over the last five years, General Motors (GM) has invested over $242 million in skilled trades and apprenticeship programs. As older people retire, there are not enough young people going into skilled trade jobs like machinists to replace them. If the U.S. is going to compete with China, companies must be able to make those skilled trade jobs attractive and lucrative to young people.

Barack Obama's prediction has not aged well. Whether it's making beer or cars, more American companies are seeing the importance of strengthening American manufacturing. We'll drink to that.

American crops. American beer. American jobs!

Huge $600M investment from @AnheuserBusch in American manufacturing!

Last year, I visited their campus in St. Louis alongside @GovMikeKehoe to celebrate exactly this: how Anheuser-Busch supports American farmers by purchasing our raw agricultural commodities while delivering high-quality manufacturing jobs right here at home!
