Some El Paso Gun Stores Are Seeing an Increase in Ammunition Sales

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — At Tactical Hunter Gun Store in east El Paso, the shelves are full of various handguns, rifles, and boxes of ammunition.
Since September, owner Ed Flores says keeping that last item in stock has been a challenge.
On September 3, Walmart’s CEO announced that the company would no longer sell handgun or short barrel rifle ammunition due to the August third mass shooting.
But instead it seems that gun owners go elsewhere now.
Local gun stores owners say after Walmart’s decision they’re selling more ammo than ever to pick up the slack.
Flores says Tactical Hunter now sells three times as much of that ammunition because of Walmart’s decision.
Some El Paso gun stores say they haven’t seen such severe increases in sales because they weren’t Walmart’s main competition.
A manager for Sportsman’s Warehouse says the store has seen a 15 percent increase in sales since Walmart’s announcement, not just in handgun ammunition, but in the sales of handguns themselves too.
El Pasoans tell KFOX 14 they have mixed reactions to these types of ammunition still being so prevalent after Walmart’s decision.
“I think it’s a very predictable response honestly. Because people still want to defend themselves, of course there’s still incidents like this happening all over the country,” said Zachary Pulido. “It’s just a natural response for this to be happening.”
“I think that Walmart has made a decision, they’re trying to stand their ground. And stores should heed that,” said Oscar Herrera.
“I feel that it’s, it depends on whose hands this ammunition gets into,” says Mara Marin. “That’s my opinion on it, you’re not going to take away the problem, there’s problems all over the world.”
